Experience the grandeur of the Nizams with High Tea at Falaknuma Palace in this travelogue written by Jayanthi Chandrasekaran. Discover the legendary 101-seater dining table, stunning views, and exquisite royal hospitality.

Falaknuma Palace has been on my wish list for some time now. When the booking was made for the high tea in the palace, least did I realise that the arrival at the gates of the palace itself sets the tone for the experience. As the guests arrive, they are welcomed at the entrance and escorted up the winding road to the palace in elegant golf carts or a horse-drawn buggy, as per the guests’ choice. We opted for the horse-drawn carriage and passed by a few black-feathered bronze turkeys and white turkeys in the garden. As the palace gradually comes into view, its stately white façade gleaming in the sunlight, one cannot help but feel a sense of anticipation and wonder.

Perched gracefully on a hill overlooking the historic city of Hyderabad, the palace itself is a marvel of architecture, seamlessly blending Italian and Tudor influences. Originally built in 1894 by Nawab Sir Viqar‑ul‑Umra, the palace later became the residence of the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan. Its name, “Falaknuma,” meaning “Mirror of the Sky,” aptly describes the stunning views it offers. Stepping into the grand reception hall, with intricately carved wooden ceilings, antique furniture, large crystal chandeliers, and a marble staircase, instantly transports you to a different time. Today, it is lovingly restored and managed by Taj Hotels, offering visitors a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the Nizams.

While the long corridors display rare paintings, manuscripts, and photographs that narrate the rich history of Hyderabad, every corner of the palace whispers stories of a bygone era. Perhaps the most enchanting way to soak in its atmosphere is through its famous High Tea experience. It’s not merely about sipping tea; it is about stepping into a world of royal charm, history, and refined hospitality.

One of the most awe-inspiring sights during the palace tour is the grand dining hall that houses the legendary 101-seater dining table. The table, said to be one of the longest dining tables in the world, stretches majestically across the hall like a polished river of wood. Each seat is marked with impeccable precision, laid out with gleaming silverware, delicate china, and crystal glasses arranged in perfect symmetry. Above the table hangs a row of magnificent Venetian chandeliers whose soft golden light reflects on the polished surface below. Imagining a royal banquet with a hundred distinguished guests seated in dignified conversation instantly transports the visitor to the lavish days of the Nizams. Even standing quietly in that hall evokes a sense of regal pageantry and grandeur.

High tea is usually served in the elegant Jade Room or in the beautiful outdoor terrace, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of Hyderabad overlooking the city. Soft classical music plays in the background as guests take their seats at tables set with fine china and silverware. The setting is refined yet welcoming, allowing visitors to relax and savour the moment.

The high tea menu is a delightful blend of tradition and indulgence. From classic English breakfast to exotic blends infused with Indian spices (aromatic Darjeeling, robust Assam, soothing green teas, and fragrant herbal infusions), there’s something to suit every palate. The attentive staff, dressed in traditional attire, linger around and each cup is brewed carefully and served with impeccable attention to detail.
Accompanying the tea is an exquisite assortment of delicacies arranged on tiered stands. Freshly baked scones with clotted cream and fruit preserves form a classic centre piece. Delicate finger sandwiches filled with cucumber, cheese, and smoked vegetables provide a savoury balance. There are also crisp pastries, buttery biscuits, and miniature cakes that look almost too beautiful to eat. The sweet section is a true testament to the pastry chef’s artistry. Macarons in vibrant colours, delicate eclairs, fruit tarts, and traditional Indian sweets like gulab jamun and barfi are meticulously presented, tempting even those with the most disciplined palates.

What makes the experience truly memorable is the leisurely pace at which it unfolds. Guests are encouraged to linger, to enjoy conversations, and to admire the surroundings. The courteous staff attend to every need with grace and quiet efficiency, ensuring that the experience remains relaxed and unhurried.

High tea at Falaknuma Palace is more than a culinary indulgence—it is a journey into history and heritage. For a few magical hours, visitors are transported into the regal world of the Nizams, where elegance, hospitality, and beauty come together in perfect harmony. Long after leaving the palace gates, the memory of that afternoon lingers—the fragrance of fine tea, the sparkle of chandeliers, the cackle of colourful turkeys and peacocks in the garden and the feeling of having briefly lived like royalty.
